Tonight was skate night for the kids' school. And although we very rarely take the kids skating, they do attend the school skate nights and birthday parties for friends. Aidan doesn't venture out on the rink too often - he prefers the safe confines of the carpet - but Teagan is a dare devil and tears it up out there!
I arrived late tonight (had to get my workout in first) to find Teagan with two friends - Kyle and Will. I asked her what she was doing and she politely let me know that she was hanging out with two boys...okay, that I can handle. The next thing I know, she's couples skating - holding hands! - with these two boys... and then just one! I was grinning ear to ear because it was so darn cute, then I felt all weepy because she's growing up and I remember those days, and then it happened... I felt completely territorial and wanted those boys to get away from her! But, no... that didn't happen. In fact, what proceeded to take place in front of my very own eyes both scared me and pleased me. Watch it play out below.
The main characters: Teagan, Kyle and Will
Brief interlude: Teagan was one of the limbo winners! And that's about the only time she was boy-free the entire night!
The kids were skating along having a great time and then as the night started winding down, last dance of the evening was another couple skate. Teagan asked Will to skate and they took the floor. Within seconds, Kyle came flying out of nowhere and tried to grab Teagan's hand - see below.
As they rounded the corner, Kyle starts pushing Will, trying to get him away from Teagan... she says he was mad because she and Will left him. I think there might be a little more to the story... but as they come back around, I snap this picture. And look how happy she is...to have boys fighting over her... oh my!
And then it happened... Will broke away and it was just Teagan and Kyle. And it looks like the boys are still having a discussion about this fact.
And around again... and it's still Teagan and Kyle, with Will trailing along behind. Persistence paid off!
Now to say that Kyle followed Teagan around all night is a gross understatement... in fact, Dan was getting so territorial that I thought he might intercede. Kyle's mom even noticed and stopped them for a picture. And at one point Teagan began trying to ditch Kyle, but he stayed right along behind her. And when she dropped something, he rushed to pick it up for her. And when she fell, he stopped and helped her up. And when she lost the back to her earring on the rink, he missed an entire song to help her look for it. I mean, really, he's such a sweet boy. We should only hope that when she does indeed pick a guy at some point when she's actually old enough to have a boyfriend, she picks a guy like Kyle. I'm just not ready for it yet.
So when we got home, I asked her why she spent her entire evening with Kyle and Will. She said she likes them because they are fun. Then she says, "Kyle's sister thinks that he likes me," to which I reply, "oh yeah, do you think he does?" She doesn't really say. But I asked her why she likes him and she tells me this - "because he's tall and he's funny and he's smart!" That's the way to pick them!!!! I'm encouraging that all the way!
And so that he doesn't get left out - he was in fact there tonight - here's a picture of Aidan!
